Meet Brett Hertel – Associate Attorney

Brett Hertel is an associate at Karpinski, Cornbrooks & Karp, P.A. His practice focuses on state and local government official matters and police liability litigation.


Prior to joining Karpinski, Cornbrooks & Karp, Brett, who is currently admitted to practice law in Delaware and New Jersey, spent nearly 10 years with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) serving in several roles. He spent four years as a litigator and one year managing attorneys in offices that represent DHS in federal immigration courts and administrative appellate courts. Brett also spent four years as an attorney advisor where he counseled DHS law enforcement personnel on enforcement actions, litigation strategies, and policy-related matters. In 2022, he served a seven-month detail as a Deputy Chief of Staff to the Deputy Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Brett graduated from Seton Hall University in 2008 with a degree in Public Relations. He graduated from the Villanova University School of Law in 2014. During law school, he interned with the Delaware Office of the Attorney General, the United States District Court for the District of Delaware, and the United States Department of Justice. He also was a participant and coach for teams in the Tulane International Baseball Arbitration Competition. Following law school, Brett clerked for the Honorable Kenneth S. Clark Jr. and Rosemary B. Beauregard on the Sussex County Delaware Court of Common Pleas.


Outside of work, Brett enjoys chasing his toddler around the house, traveling with his family, and collecting sports memorabilia. Otherwise, you can find him on the golf course or at Camden Yards.
